Do I have to bring and carry water for 4 days for the Inca trail?
No, water is taken from sources on the route and will be cooked to disinfect. If you want to be extra sure you can bring purifying tablets/drops. Water tastes a bit strange, but with a bit of squeezed lemon the funny flavor can be taken away.
What is Altitude Sickness (Sorroche) and how can I avoid it?
To adapt to the altitude the best way to travel is slowly into the altitude. Like the route: Lima-Arequipa, Puno, Cusco. Altitude Arequipa is 2.400m and probably you will not have any difficulties. The Colca Canyon is much higher (3.400m). Traveling thereto a top of 4.850m has to be crossed. During a quick going up and going down (during the trip into the Canyon) one usually notices something. (short respiration, tiredness). It¹s important to take some precautions (no alcohol, cigarettes and you should drink a lot of water). The first evening you might have a headache or you do not feel to well. These symptoms are usually temporary, your body has to adapt slowly. Take the time you need and do not rush.
How difficult are the treks?
Important to know is that the treks are not regular ÂŚwalks¹ but serious hikes. They require a lot of energy and effort and are a real physical achievement especially at such unusual altitudes. They require a good physical condition . You should do necessary preparations before and also during your trip. Rise slowly to the altitude, do jogging and other sports in your country and also during your trip in Peru, try to walk as much as you can especially when you are on altitudes. A good preparation usually avoids problems during the treks in Peru.
Do you advise arranging excursions ourselves?
Arranging excursions takes a lot of time and it is difficult to judge if an agent is reliable or if they do offer a good service. The language is an extra difficulty and can obstruct your plans. We ensure that if you arrange your trip in advance you will see more of Peru than when you are doing it by yourselves.
